1 month old!

Henry turned 1 month old yesterday.  He had his one month check up today and he's doing great! The official stats (against the WHO growth curves) are:
Weight: 10 lbs 2 oz, 54th percentile
Length: 22 inches, 69th percentile
Head circumference: 37.75 cm, 62nd percentile

Here are the weekly photos I've been taking with his white tiger
Birth week

1 week

2 weeks
 3 weeks

1 month (and passed out from all the excitement)!

He was kind enough to stay awake when we were out with the Nutrition gals on his big day.

It's sort of hard to tell how much he's grown.  Or, maybe it's that although I think he's grown so much 3.5 lbs isn't captured in the photos ;)

Henry is growing quickly

We'll let you know Henry's growth status on Friday when he's one month old, but we're confident he's growing well!   In reference to the WHO growth standards and based on our measurements at home, on June 10th, at 3 weeks of age, Henry was:
67th percentile for weight (~10 lbs: had just use my home scale which is not the most accurate scale)
66th percentile for length (21.5 inches)
52nd percentile for weight-for-length
85th percentile for head circumference (38 cm).

Henry and Guinness are bonding

After Henry and Guinness spent awhile just hanging out together

They spent some quality time napping together on the couch:

Brit Milah May 24, 2010

On May 24 we had a Brit Milah (or Bris) for Henry to honor his maternal Jewish heritage.

My grandmother was born in Cairo, Egypt after her family immigrated from Izmir, Turkey to join a larger Jewish community. It was there that she met my grandfather who was an American with the military. When she moved to America at the age of 22, 4 months pregnant with my mom, she slowly stopped practicing Judaism.  Over the years I have learned more about my family history and in the process have tried to increase my understanding of (Sephartic) Judaism.  Because Scott and I believe it is important and valuable to understand, embrace, and respect family and community we held the Bris for Henry.

The ceremony was so special. The meaning of the ceremony and the words said during the ceremony overshadowed any of the (brief) physical and emotional discomfort that was felt by me and Scott, Henry, and others in attendance. Our friends Emily Gurley and Aimee were there as was our Doula Emily. My sister and her husband and daughter as well as Scott's parents were present. Finally, my friend Joe Bressler with whom I commuted from Washington DC to Baltimore a few years ago came.

One component of the ceremony that I really appreciated was that everyone present played a role either by presenting Henry to the Rabbi and the Chair of Elijah (Sarah and Drew),

holding Henry while he was circumcised (Joe: This special role that must be performed by a Jewish male and Joe was the only one besides the Rabbi),

saying a blessing before the actual Bris (Emily Gurley), introducing Henry's Hebrew name (Emily and Aimee),

saying a blessing while he was circumcised (me and Scott), and saying a final blessing (Phyllis and Bob).

As a final part of the ceremony, Scott said a few words about Henry's English and Hebrew names all of which honor his family.

Henry Emerson: Henry was a common name in both Scott's mother's and father's families. In fact, our Henry could be referred to as Henry the 7th because on Phyllis's side there was Henry George Garbe (his great grandfather); Henry Allan Garbe (his great great grandfather); and Henry Kraft (his great-great-great-great grandfather. On Bob's side there was Henry W Merrill, Jr (his great grandfather); Henry W Merrill (his great-great-great grandfather); and Henry Clinton Merrill (his great-great-great-great grandfather). Emerson is a common family name in my father's family. Henry's great-great-great grandmother was the daughter of Ralph Waldo Emerson. When she had a child who would not have the Emerson last name she decided to make it a first name.

Yaakov Boruch: I asked my grandmother to help us come up with Henry's Hebrew name.  She suggested we name him after her father Jacques Braha. Rabbi Rappaport, who performed the Bris, adapted the name into a Hebrew one.  Yaakov is an adaptation of Jacob and Boruch (similar to Braha) means "blessing" in Hebrew.

As I mentioned previously, this was a very special day and I am so glad we were able to hold the ceremony.  It meant a great deal to us to have Sarah, Drew, and Kaylin, and Phyllis and Bob participate. We would have loved to have more family present but the strict timing is difficult to work around.

Becky graduates from Hopkins

On May 25th and 26th we attended graduation events despite Henry being only a few days old.  The first was an awards ceremony.  Because I was receiving an award that was new this year there was a special presentation at the beginning of the event that included my name being called by the Dean.  Because of the special treatment I must admit it was quite fun to be presented with a new award.  All the while Henry was asleep in his father's lap.

The next day we went to the actual Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health graduation ceremony at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall.  Again Henry slept peacefully through the whole event. I certainly missed him while I sat up front; the 4 hours I was with the other students were the most hours I had been away from Henry.

We were so proud of our little man for attending the events without a fuss!  Wow, I can't believe I'm done with school - forever!  I guess it's time to think about what I want to be when I grow up ;)

Grandparents meet Henry

Phyllis and Bob Merrill changed their flights to arrive a day early to meet their first grandson as soon as possible.  We had a great week relaxing in the apartment as well as attending a few Hopkins graduation events.  The proud grandparents did not pass up one possible minute of holding Henry and for that Henry was thankful.
Tad and Charlotte came for a day and a half on Memorial Day weekend to meet Henry.  Although it was a short visit I think Henry was able to spend a good amount of time with each.

What a great first 2 weeks of family visitors!

Sarah, Drew, and Kaylin visit

We were so happy to have my sister, Sarah, and her husband, Drew, and 1 year old daughter, Kaylin, visit for the week surrounding Henry's birth.  They arrived the Friday before he was born, left for the weekend after he was born, and returned that Sunday night to be able to attend his Brit Milah on Monday (May 24th).  We had so much fun playing with Kaylin, and I definitely benefited from hearing Sarah's bits of advice about motherhood.

Kaylin bonded with Guinness - and found a real thrill with eating any dog hair she could find.

Kaylin also couldn't get enough of giving baby Henry kisses and hugs.

I had to include this photo because of Henry's face.
Here's the happy bunch.  You're welcome to visit anytime!
